About the artist
alto saxophone
Born in 1926 in North Carolina, alto saxophonist Lou Donaldson played soulful, blues-drenched bebop and soul jazz. He was in Art Blakey's quintet on the classic A Night at Birdland sessions, recorded with Clifford Brown and Horace Silver, and was named an NEA Jazz Master.
