About the artists

Founded in 1966 as the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra, the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra has played Monday nights at the Village Vanguard ever since, often called the longest-running steady gig in jazz. Expect punchy, sophisticated big-band writing from Thad Jones, Bob Brookmeyer and Jim McNeely.

Ralph Lalama is a big-toned tenor saxophonist rooted in classic hard bop. A longtime member of the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, he came up in the bands of Woody Herman and Buddy Rich and has recorded several albums as a leader for Criss Cross.

Pianist and composer Adam Birnbaum is a Juilliard-trained New Yorker known for elegant, inventive piano-trio jazz. He has worked with drummer Al Foster, the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra and Jazz at Lincoln Center, and his trio album Three of a Mind features Doug Weiss and Foster.
